Am I being reasonable, or heartless and miserly?

My husband has two pet rats, a birthday gift from me. I gave them to him because I knew how much he'd enjoyed having pet rats in the past, but to be honest I don't like rats too much myself. His particular two critters are sorta cute, but both chew on things and one pees on me if I ever pick it up, so I'm not too fond of them.

One of the rats (the peeing one) seems to have constant health problems. First, it needed antibiotics for an infection ($70 vet visit and $20 for medicine). Then, it got an injury and needed more medicine and a separate cage. Now, it got an abscess and my husband consented to pay $250 to have surgery to remove the abscess.

Personally, I think it is ludicrous to spend that kind of money on a RODENT. We are fortunate enough not to need to pinch pennies, but as relatively new homeowners, we both generally try to live frugally, so these expenditures really bother me. What makes this worse is that the abscess is somewhat likely to return at some point, which will make even more veterinary surgery a necessity (in my husband's mind).

The worst part is that when I express that this is not a wise use of our money, my husband insinuates that I lack compassion and asks how he could let his little pet suffer. Not only that, but his parents (my in-laws) agree with him that no cost is too much to save the rat.

So, you tell me--am I a reasonable person or just a heartless miser?

Update: September 09, 2010.
Thanks for the responses. True, I don't especially like the rats, and true, I knowingly made a personal sacrifice in giving him these pets. But the main issue is that we have only had this animal for a few months and it has been in for treatment three times. It could likely live for 3 more years, and at the current rate it could rack up a couple thousand dollars in vet bills. That was something I couldn't anticipate when I bought the rats for him--an unpleasant surprise. I like animals (though I'm more of a dog person) and understand making sacrifices for them. But doesn't one have to draw the line somewhere, especially when the budget is getting stretched pretty far? They are loved as pets but aren't human beings.

"If your dog is fat, you aren't getting enough exercise."

Start by taken him out for a short walk, then slowly increase this exercise daily, if possible...Long live your dog!!!

My dog has a fever. What can I give him safely until I can take him to the vet tomorrow?

My dog has an infection in his nail bed. He is in a lot of pain to where he even bit when I was putting anti-biotic ointment on it. The vet's office is closed. He now seems to have a fever because his nose is dry and hot. What can I give him to bring the fever down and make him more comfortable without endangering his life?
