name change

Anyone out there have any experience in changing names?

I HATE my name and I want to change it before a start a public career. It's the exact same name as my Dad and it's bugged me forever.

How can I pull off a name change (first name only) without friends and family who already know me thinking I'm a wierdo?

I don't think anyone's going to think you're a weirdo for changing your name. You will have some difficulty getting family and friends who've known you a long time to call you by the new name. They're so used to calling you by your original name that it's hard to change. You may also get some static from your parents about abandoning the name they chose for you.

That said, if you do want to change your name, I urge you to stick with your plan and do it now. It's best to get your college diploma, job history, publications, credit history, etc., all filed under one name.

I don't know what your name is, but you might consider going by you first initial, middle name and last name. For example: Henry Ross Perot cleans up nicely when he's called H. Ross Perot. Most of his friends call him Ross.
