On TV shows, do the actors generally wear their own clothes? If an actress looks really great,

does that reflect the costume director's professionalism, or does the actress simply have very good taste? I'm thinking about shows where the female investigators or prosecuting attorneys look gorgeous, day after day, working their fannies off in their stressful jobs.

They don't generally wear their own clothes, unless it's someone like an extra in a crowd scene in which case they may have been told what to wear and filmed wearing their own clothes.

Lead actors are usually dressed by the costume designer/wardrobe department, and if it's a show that is famous for its fashions (like Sex and the City or Gossip Girl) the show may publicize what exactly the actors wore in a given episode and where the public can buy it.

I have a friend who was cast in a commercial and showed up to the shoot in jeans and a t-shirt, and some costume jewelry. To her surprise, she was told that the director liked what she was already wearing better than what the wardrobe department had planned to put her in! She ended up being on TV in her own clothes, which was a compliment to her taste but also a disappointment because the planned wardrobe was a Chanel dress that she could never afford and would have no reason to try on in real life. Oh well...

Costume designer/director usually makes those decisions, but the actresses' taste in clothing and physical appearance are taken into consideration as well - Such as: what colors look good on her? What styles flatter her figure? Is the outfit comfortable enough for her to work in it all day? Does it look natural on her when she moves around? etc etc etc

No, the actors do not wear their own clothes. Wardrobe is responsible for this.

TV shows probably have their own stylists that dress the actors. and they probably take into consideration what jpt wrote.

The actors clothes are selected by the costume department. They select them based on what looks best on the actor. After the scene, the clothes go back to the costume department for later use.
Although actors have been know to buy or "steal" something that looks good on them.

As far as I know, they wear a certain wardrobe of clothes for their character. Each show or movie has a wardrobe person or wardrobe team. So no, they don't wear their own clothes for their roles. Otherwise, a lot of actors and actresses would have great taste in clothing and would know just what to wear for their role.

From what I know, actors can take their own cloth or chose what is in the set for them. Of course, the director must agree with any of their choices. I also learned that you get paid a little extra if you use your own cloth , I guess because you invested or they didnt have to use their clothes.

I have done two pilots in my career and the question is NO. They do a color test based on what colors, cut and styles that look best in the lighting and setting depicted. You don't get to take it home. Generally they have 3 To 6 of each outfit.
