What do you do when your passenger in your car is too heavy to wear a seatbelt?

How do you handle this? A friend is getting a lift to work for another two weeks, his car is incapacitated. However, the worry of the driver is that the seatbelt doesn't go around him. He must be about 400 lbs. The noise of the dinging (which happens when one needs to fasten a seatbelt in the newer cars) is bad enough for twenty miles, but isn't it also illegal for a passenger to not buckle up? Is there a remedy for this seatbelt situation?

It is illegal and the person that gets cited is the DRIVER of the car.

I would not drive my car, while a person rode in it, not buckled in. It is not worth the ticket OR the accident liability should you become involved in an accident and HE/SHE gets hurt.

Since the manufactures did not think of this problem, I would make the passenger wear a cloth rope long enough to wrap his upper body to the seat.
