Have you ever gone on short term disability for depression?

If you had a feeling that you might be about to get fired or put on a performance plan would you consider going on short term disability before they could do that? In this case you would be struggling with anxiety and depression and switching and going off meds and under a doctors care...and it has made you less stellar then you used to be.

Would this help you protect yourself from being fired until you find a new job?

The only way it might help, is in providing income. And, your present employer cannot fire you while you are on it. But, they sure can fire you the moment you return.

Just be careful how you handle the interviews for a new job. Keep in mind that they might try and verify your employment and call your present employer. If they do, your present employer would find out that you are NOT disabled and ARE out looking for another job. For that, they could both fire you AND report you to the government.
