Do animals rape unwilling animals in the wild?

They probably do. I mean animals murder each other all time for food or for territorial dominance. Animals don't have legal understanding. Animals don't understand basic rights or respect life.

Update: April 16, 2010.
dragonflyfairie, I love your response. I am giving you a star for making me laugh. You think animals have morality and know right/wrong. Morality requires upper levels of intelligence that animals simply do not possess. Even little children and mentally challenged adults lack morality and they are at least 10x smarter than the smartest animal. Animals that rape have no sense of right or wrong, they are just acting out their animalistic instincts. It's like the killer whale who killed the Sea World trainer, it didn't know better, it has no understanding of murder.

i believe that they do actually..do not humans rape? do not humans kill for stupid reasons? you see it ALL the time on the news. Animals can go bad just as humans can. i believe animals do understand right and wrong.but they have their own laws..they communicate with each other differently but they still love each other..& yes sometimes they hate each other to. they are simply a different species then we are. we just do not understand them

No, I don't think animals rape.

One, the female needs to be fertile to attract a male...if she's not giving off "the scent", he's not interested in her.

If she's not interested in him, she can either leave the area, or lay down. Animal anatomies are not condusive to rape. A female would have to "stand" for it.

Two, rape is a violent act, meant to debase someone. The only time animals are violent, are when they are hunting for food, or protecting their territory, or young. Sex doesn't come into play in those scenarios.

And animals don't fight wars against their own species for a personal gain. Maybe territorial scuffles but not large scale wars.

We're the only species that delights in the large scale destruction of our own brothers and sisters, all while destroying bits of the earth and atmosphere in the process.

Animals don't hold grudges, humans do.

Who's the worse animal here?

I dont know - sex among animals is so instinctive, there's not much courting or wooing. Every watch cats fuck? It's a sort of rape; same with dogs. Same with most animals. Only us humans go through such a complicated courting process.

My cat was a whore before I had her fixed. She went through 3 litters before I could even get it done, every time I would try she'd end up pregnant again before I could. After she was fixed she wanted nothing to do with sex or other cats at all. We since have moved out to the country & when we first moved in would hear her fighting off the stray barn cats & when I run out to break it up she runs in with a wet ass & moans throughout the night. So now I got a dog & he keeps all the strange cats at bay helping keep her safe. So yes they do try to rape. I've even seen male dogs jump up on other male dogs trying to get some. The other dog usually gets mad & gets out of it though, but they keep trying anyway.

There is a book by a Harvard Prof. called "The Natural History of Rape" which discusses research on the history of rape among animals. It seems that rape is an effective way to increase the male's odds of reproduction for many species, and therefore selected as evolutionary behavior.

Note that some species of males, such as lions, often kill all the children of the female's last male before taking up with her. No single mothers welcome among lions.

I know that frogs rape each other (the ovulating female will lure in males; she will choose the male with the deepest croak, but other males will rape her while the alpha male is on his way). I know of many a time when a dog has raped someone's foot...it's rape AND bestiality.

Absolutly. Granted... they don't call it "rape"... but you see on animal planet sometimes about a stronger animal "dominating" (ie fucking) weaker animals. Anyone who believes animals have morality needs to pull their head out of their ass. Go ask the grizzly man how moral he thought they were as they ate him.
