Pilates or Yoga? Why or why not?

Initially I wanted to do Yoga but when i started to look for a decent place to learn they all suggested me to do pilates instead. I'm torn.
What do you think?

Update: February 08, 2010.
I have a DVD of 3 complete yoga workouts. I thought about taking Pilates and try the Yoga DVD on my own. For now I want to be in a better shape and flexible. Thank you for your answers, I'll start pilates ASAP. =)

I do both, alternating between the 2. There are some good DVDs out there.

It really depends on what you're hoping to achieve, and what kind of shape you're in right now.

Pilates is great for strengthening your core, which will, in turn, make Yoga easier for you. So I would tend to agree with the advice you've received so far. Good luck! :)

Neither;
...the first sounds like a disease, and the second sounds like a dessert.

I like both and other forms of exercise, Tia ji, I have an exercise ball (good for balance and joints)
and have just joined a gym.
there is a yoga Pilate's mix that you could look into.

I practice a morning salutation ..in the morning. (yoga)

and do Tia Ji impromptu

and the past few months I have been struggling physically

so I am not in a regular practice of anything at this time

it has been physically permitting

but If you learn one to a place of comfort and then learn

the other ,you can then do them impromptu and depending on

what your body is calling for.

that is what I do and I am not a person who feels to good about

trick routine so that works for me , and some people

do better in routine.
