Why are people oppossed to abortion?

Are they really so stupid that they think a clump of cells is a life? Well a little news for you it is not a life until it is born.

Update: November 22, 2009.
Thank you electragold21! You are pretty much the only person on here with a brain, and for all the fools that said I need a biology lesson are you f*cking kidding? I have studied biology all my life and am a hundred perecent right, you need a biology lesson, instead on just believing what one brainwashed, illerate told you is right.

Probably because you are so stupid that you can't see that it is part of their personal belief system.

They are driven by what they want to believe in their mind instead of scientific fact in which states a fetus is not a life until it takes its own first breath. Other countries know this and that is why in China they will kill the child as it is coming out of the womb by breaking it skull, it is fine as long as it has not taken its first breath as it can not yet feel pain, yes you can say it is alive but only in the same sense as a plant.

Hi,I think ur too young and u have to go for some researches,
I can say this because there is a lot of people out there who don't consider abortion,
And we also cannot blame other people do the abortion because they have their own Good reasons..
It all depends on the situation and FAITH..
Like religions,sorroundings, financial and understangs.
Hope u understand what i mean..

I agree with you that the people who pretend that abortion should be illegal because the nonviable human fetus is of human extraction and alive are really stupid. It's not about belief systems at this point--it's about understanding human biology, and it looks as though most people against abortion failed their HS biology courses.

On the other hand: some people who are reasonably intelligent do not oppose safe, legal abortion, but would not want to have abortions themselves. These people should be respected, in the same way that people who would choose to abort an unwanted pregnancy should be respected--everyone's choice regarding HER OWN body should be respected, as long as that choice is an informed choice.

I tell you, though--I cringe when I see some young girl with no education and no career hopes telling people that because she's pregnant she has to have the baby. People who think they HAVE to ruin their lives because they were born with female reproductive organs are dangerously brainwashed, uninformed, or just cognitively impaired.

People also believe in Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, that racism doesn't exist anymore, and that the guy really does love them! That's why. Most people are gullible and silly and bleeding heart types. But the bottom line is that unless they are going to be there with their checkbook to help raise the kid, they really have no rights to say much of anything about what a pregnant woman does with the parasite growing in her womb. Because that is what a fetus is - a parasite. It sucks whatever it needs from the mother's body, even her vital organ tissues and even her bones. Yikes.

It's actually scary--one of your biologically illiterate respondents just said that "the fetus" (speaking in regard to the abortion issue in general) can "respond to stimuli" (again, no specifications about WHEN a fetus can respond to stimuli).

96% of abortions occur before 16wks gestation. At even 16 wks gestation, the nonviable fetus has the brain activity of a bowl of jello. A fetus is NOT able to respond to stimuli on any level until LONG AFTER abortion is no longer an issue (abortion on demand is illegal after 24 wks gestation and the most recent studies concerning fetus response patterns show that the absolute earliest that a fetus can respond to stimuli is 29 wks gestation).

The fact that anyone mentions fetal response to stimuli in the context of the abortion debate means that the person who mentioned it is biologically illiterate to a frightening degree--because fetal response is not an issue in regard to legal abortion; no fetus aborted under the current abortion laws governing abortion on demand was old enough to be able to respond to any stimuli at all.

And you know what's the scariest part? Four people gave the moron who said that "fetuses" can respond to stimuli a community star. I'm not joking. It's amazing that some people on this site are considered intelligent enough to leave their residences unattended. :/

Of course, it's life as soon as the cells start to multiply. How can you not see that you ignorant person!

Ehm, then again, I always thoughts that tumors and cancer go the same way? Multiplying cells. So they're alive as well right? And chemo-ing or surgically removing them is murder as well right? xD

Seriously, I don't get the fuss about abortions in the US. By the legal deadline, the fetus is essentially the same as a tumor. A bunch of cells. That's it. Ok, it might become a wonderful human being one day but considering that ants might someday evolve and take over the world, it's genocide to step on an ant now. What if this one ant was the one that was going to take care of the mutation that would provide them with the means of reaching a higher state of consciousness?

People have to stop saying that a bunch of cells is alive because it WILL become a sentient being someday.

Well, here's my two cents...

I think that if abortions were cheaper, and more easily accessible, that we would find less babies in dumpsters.
BUT in the defense of those who oppose it, mostly women, its hard (if not almost impossible) to be growing a life inside of you, and not become emotionally attached to it. Once you become attached to that potential life, abortion sounds like murder. You are killing your potential child, whether scientifically, they are alive or not.
Right now, at this point in my life (engaged with one 3 year old, fiance is in school and work 80 hours a week), another child would be more of a burden than a pleasure, so i would probably not keep it, but not without much grief. I could not 'get rid' of my own offspring without being emotionally shaken.
The act of abortion is not as cut and dry as scientifically driven minds make it sound. You are right, the baby isnt viable or 'alive' until it takes its first breath, but it is still a part of the mother that the mother will have a hard time letting go of.
THAT is why people are opposed to abortion.

One, they are living cells.
Two, the heart starts beating at 5 weeks, therefore it is a life. most abortions happen after 5 weeks all the way up to 20 weeks.
The baby is fully formed and is and was a fully living being.

I think you're the stupid one to believe anything.
You can be all for abortion but to say the baby is not living until it is born is completely retarded.
Have you ever seen a baby kicking in a womans stomach? Probably not.
Your ignorance is annoying and upsetting.

Nice post; you were already able to show your ignorance and closed-mindedness before anyone had even responded.

Do you really think that accusing people of being stupid is the best way to foster an intelligent discussion?

And what makes you think that an unborn baby is not life? Life is not defined as having been born. The unborn child is able to respond to many outside stimuli, from the mood of the mother, to different sounds (loud crashes, parent's voices, music). They're able to move around and kick, as many pregnant women have experienced (kind of hard for something that's not alive to kick, isn't it?). And even today, we are finding that babies are able to survive outside of the womb (sometimes with a little help) earlier than was ever thought possible.

ACtually, that's not true. I agree that in the early stages (as in under 6 weeks of gestation), it is actually nothing more than a nural tube, the rudimentrly beginnings of a brain.

But honestly, do you REALLY think that if a woman decides to have an abortion when she's 7 monthes pregnant that the baby's "jut a lump of cells"? babies born as young as 22 weeks gestation can live now. It's called "age of viability". Look it up.

Try giving birth to a six week old fetus and ask it to get you a beer or sit with you and watch a dvd???? Try diapering it and feeding it and then talk about life. The fact is even full term babies sadly, don't always make it. That's why people say I have 2 kids and one on the way. Not I have 3, when they have two, and are pregnant. A life is a life when it enters this world and becomes part of LIFE. The same people who are so pro life are never pro cancer cells! They are alive as well. So save THE CANCER CELLS too and all and every living things. Sadly, they also have no issue killing abortionists, and are usually for capital punishment...go figure? No one will ever agree on this one. The best answer, the one of peace, is to "Agree to just Disagree"...Good Nite.

Besides, why are you so FOR abortions? If your parents, or mother had chosen to abort you, then you would not be here now would you?

Think it through...just don't hurt yourself.

Probably because people are taught from childhood that a person is a person as soon as they are conceived and that since they are 'living/breathing' fetuses that need nourishment/care/safe place to grow, they are 'life'...maybe science doesn't consider something that's not able to survive on its own not living but how does the fetus grow and develop if it's not living...:D

Cells are alive. Babies can hear, smell and move inside the womb. During an amnio they will actually move away from the needle b/c yes they can feel it. Just because they don't breathe like we do doesn't mean they aren't alive. They even get hiccups in the womb b/c they breathe in water preparing their lungs for breathing air. Try telling a pregnant woman that the being growing inside of her is not alive and functioning inside her body. That's crap.

I just wanted to comment on what electragold said: just because a young woman chooses to carry her unplanned pregnancy to full term does not mean she is going to ruin her life. There are lists... long lists... of couples waiting to adopt. I wish people would stop looking at this issue as if there were only two options abortion or having to raise a child, when adoption satisfies both respect for life and respect for ones future.
