No. The average person probably could not.

While I was in the army, the 50 mile hike was considered to be hard. And it was. But after some training, everyone did it.

Think about it like this. The average person can walk about 4 miles per hour over flat ground for several hours. If he does that for 15 hours they could go 60 miles.

But lets assume that they might want to stop and eat lunch. Call it a "lunch hour". Then assume that they might need to stop and go to the toilet every few hours, and give them two toilet breaks at 15 minutes each. And finally, lets assume that everyone walks for 2 hours and takes a 15 minute rest break, to have some water, eat a power bar, and just sit. Say we give them 3 breaks in the morning and 3 after lunch for a total of 6 breaks or 1 1/2 hours. We add that all up and find that besides the walking time we need another 3 hours. So we need to walk for about 18 hours including stops.

That is a long time for a hike. Certainly it can be done. The infamous 50 mile hike started at sunrise and finished after dark, and probably lasted 14 or 15 hours. We all survived but were really tired, and then got to sleep in the rain.

But average person, I don't think so. Although there are some people out there who could do it.

I do my 5.1 miles in an 1:10, less if I jog part of it so yeah, they could but depending on how fast they went it would take pretty much all day.

The average person walks a mile in fifteen minutes, so it'd take them twenty hours if they didn't stop to eat or use the restroom or rest, basically.

Are you needing to walk somewhere? Try the Greyhound, or the Craigslist rideshare if you really need to get somewhere. Walking sucks. In my opinion...

It's possible but not probable. At 3 miles per hour it would take 20 minutes. It would take a good athelete to do it.

Since you said average, the average person walks at between 3 and 3.5 mph..mostly 3.0 mph, therefore 20 hours.

NO. Only an extraordinary person could walk 60 miles in a day.

I regularly walk 4 miles a day at a very brisk pace and this takes over an hour.

I've done 25 mile walking marathons in a day and they take the whole day.

So, let's say someone was that extraordinary person who could keep the pace throughout the day (highly unlikely)--

and say they could walk 4 mph an hour--which is VERY brisk walking--

with no breaks for food or bathroom or rest at all -- which is insane-- at that pace they would take some 15 hours to walk 60 miles

good luck with that.
