What's a great cologne for men?

I am looking to buy some cologne, I want something not too strong. What are some of the most appealing men's cologne's ladies?

Update: July 01, 2009.
Well thanks everyone for your great responses. I think I got more responses to that question than any other I ever posted. Hmmm wonder why? Anyway after considering all the info I think I've decided to go with either Cool Water, Aramis, or Happy! Although there's something about wearing a cologne named Happy that I find a bit unsettling! lol. So it probably won't be that. I did run through Target today and I checked out a few of the ones they had. I ended up buying something called Gravity by Coty. It's in a blue bottle. It's not too strong and it wasn't too expensive. It smells clean and a little woodsy. Does anyone have any experience with that? But like I said ultimately it will be either Aramis or Cool Water. Thanks everyone Gregory

The best-smelling, best-selling colognes don't always mix with everyone's personal body chemistry. Seriously, go to a perfume counter (large department store, or even discount store) & try them out a couple at a time. Department stores usually have little free vial samples that you can try out on your own time. If the counter has coffee beans, that's a good sign: Coffee beans clear your nose so you can smell again, because after several scents, your nose no longer knows! Don't just try them on your wrist. Pulse points other than your wrist---like the inside bend of your elbow---are good places to try a scent out with your own body's chemistry. After 5, 10, 20 minutes, you'll know if you like the way you smell wearing a particular scent. I will say that scents by Aramis & Joop & Calvin Klein are good places to start :)

I agree with utahmom. I am not a big fan of cologne. However, if you want one, I would suggest Bowling Green. It sounds clique, but I also like Polo.

Lots of research shows that natural male sweat is the MOST appealing scent to attract females. It has lots of biological triggers (pheromones) that work in subliminal biological ways to make females want to get closer, etc. All those commercial products come in a distant second or worse.

I think the scent has to fit your chemistry to smell good on you. There are perfumes that smell good on my friends but not on me and vice versa.

What you do when you are shopping for cologne is spray it in the cap first and take a whiff. If you like how it smells, stick a little on your wrist. I know men don't wear it on the wrist, but it's a good place to try it because you can try two at the same time, one scent for each wrist. Wear the scents for a couple hours so they can mellow and smell them again. If one still really smells really good, (some don't after that time) that's the one to get. You might be surprised which smell best on you.

For favorite men's scents, I prefer the fresh ones with sage, evergreen and mint in them, and my father had one called Royall Lyme that I thought smelled so good that I'd sneak some for myself.

Mmmmm I love good cologne on a man but, I don't want to smell him before he enters the room. I just melt when I go in for that hug and I bury my face in his chest and get that fresh, masculine, fragrance filling my nose.

Dolce & Gabana Light Blue and Bvlgari Black are two very nice colognes.

I find it intoxicating when they smell fresh and clean!

Not sure if they still sell it or not. But Stetson cologne is very sexy in my opinion. Not too strong, but seriously very delicious scent.

I like Armani. I have had an awful lot of women tell me that I smell great when I wear it. One time I was singled out a party as some women said that something smelled absolutely great and then they said hey, it's you that smells like that. Every date I've ever been on when I've worn it has always told me that it smells just wonderful.

Hate to just repeat what others have said, but truly, I dislike cologne on men. A soapy, clean smell, to me is the most attractive scent on a man.

My memories of cologne on men have always been the odor that you tried to get rid of. It always seems to suck the oxygen right out of the air.

Dude, Read no more, I'm your man!

I'm a cologne-aholic and conisiouer!

people aleady mentioned the great female grabbing colognes:

Dolce & Gabanna (light blue is ok but go for the older one! in which the cap and box are dark blue)

Armani CODE is a good one too, I have seen girls melt infront of me on that one.

Cool water is just cool, I think thats like the alphamale cologne where it makes girls like being around you and makes you cool around the guys as well.

But...here is a good way so you would have to refer to answerolgy.

Do the sampling on your pulse region thing like what that chick said and then let the females you know be the judge. Infact that could be your "pick up" line.

Just walk up to any girl and say "what do you think of this smell?" right after you say that pay EXTRA attention to their reaction towards the smell, if you see what you like, then you will know.

But if you get one of those vague answers, then follow up with "would you buy that for YOUR man?"

Also about those girls that say soap and a natural smell is better. I think the balance between that is to just spray once or twice on your chest to sort of "hide the smell" and let your natural smell take over.

one more thing is instead of using cologne just stick to oldspice redzone antipersperant. I swear girls litterally nose dived into my armpits because they couldnt beleive a nice smell was coming out of there.

good luck.

I'm a little late with an answer but after reading all the above responses, it would appear that you will smell just like every other guy in the room. Some old favorites of mine are "Grey Flannel" and "Obsession" for men. Remember that "2" sprays is too much. As a woman when I decide to use the atomizer... I spray it on a cotton-ball or q-tip then apply it to the few areas that a "close encounter" would make the scent not over-powering but intended for only who I select.
Good luck with your selection. The best way to know if it's having the correct reaction is how it "attracts" or "repels" when you wear it. Because your obviously attractive it shouldn't be too hard too notice if they hang around or run for the door! :)

I think people who wear colognes or perfumes are inconsiderate. They usually apply them with a crop duster and you can smell them miles away. Why do they think everyone enjoys their reek as much as they do? Whatever you use, use it so sparingly that you can't be smelled unless someone has their nose on your neck. I bet you'd be offended if I walked around with dog doo on my shoe and expected you to enjoy the smell.

Not to rain on your parade, but I dont think women particularly like to smell cologne on men anymore. May workplaces dont want their people to wear scents at all, and I've found that most men's colognes are way too sweet.
