A BMR calculator online said I need 1533 cal/daily to MAINTAIN my weight. How can I lose weight?

I've read that, to lose weight, you should cut 500 cal from your diet. But I've also read that you shouldn't go below 1200/day. Will I burn enough calories exercising to lose weight? If I do a pretty rigorous workout in the eliptical for 30 min I only burn about 300 calories. I have 65% lung capacity.

I'm 19, 5'8" and about 145lbs. I only want to lose about 10lbs, or just get in better shape. I'm fairly active.

You can always eat 1400-1500 calories per day and exercise more.
Just remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so as you tone you will probably NOT see a weight loss.

145 is fine for your height.

Since it is only 10lbs, diary log everything you eat and drink in a day. See what junk or snack stuff you can do without. For example, do you drink sugar filled sodas? Cut those out will cause you to lose weight. Cut out fast foods. Cut out snack and junk type foods. Watch your portion amounts. That's how you lose that weight since you say you're fairly active. And if your basal metabolic rate is 1533, cutting down the intake will also cause you to lose weight although you may find yourself hungry.

for ever 3500 calories = 1 pound...
you should consult a nutionist or your local doctor for a good physical and get his/her advice.

Odds are, you can lose 10lb in 10 weeks doing what you're doing. As you get fitter, gradually increase the duration of your training. If you have the option, try using other machines to fill in the time (eg instead of doing 30 min on elliptical, do 20 min on elliptical and 20 min on rower). Alternatively, you could aim to burn 300kcal each work out, and decrease your energy intake to 1300kcal per day, and that'll be your 500kcal reduction.

I've been working out for 6 weeks now. I'm up to 70 minutes on the elliptical and I'm burning around 1050 calories as per the computer read out on the elliptical.
