If you had a broken car, would you donate to a charity for a tax write off?

Or would you try to sell it, even for a couple of hundred dollars?

Update: April 30, 2009.
Well I was all set to donate it, and then the mechanic where the car was left told us he could get three hundred for it. My husband cancelled the donation and it sat for two weeks. I just called the mechanic, and he said he could only get two hundred for it as it is a 1998 with a blown head gasket and a cracked engine. I will pick up money later. My husband is laid off, and yes we were making good money, but we still support a couple of kids and now it is just me working. All in all though, I think the donation was a better way to go. I have done it before. They help your charity, and if they fix it and sell it at auction, you get that write off not just a five hundred dollar credit.

In the long run they give you more of a tax credit if you donate it than you would ever get selling it. I did it once.

depends on how desparate i was for the money. the tax write off is better if you have money and are paying taxes in the 28% bracket. selling it is better if you are dirt poor and need the cash.
