I'm an atheist, and I still say "bless you" or "god bless you" when someone sneezes. It's just a saying and it doesn't mean I believe in god or blessings. I say "holy shit" too, but that doesn't mean I believe shit is holy.

Haha I dunno if you've ever seen Dane Cook, but according to him, you say "When you die, nothing happens!" It's much funnier in his skit then when I say it.. hmm. Unless I knew someone was an atheist, I just say "bless you," and even if I did, I'd probably say the same thing.

The whole point of saying "Bless you" when someone sneezes started a long time ago when people suspected that sneezing caused your heart to stop for a moment, and just in case it might not start up again, they started saying "God bless you". So, it's not all that closely related to religion anyhow, just wishing someone good health!

lol @ mrinsano's answer

I Just say *bless you*...we do that because the heart stops for what, (a nanosecond?) when we sneeze...I've read something about this -I KNOW.

LOLOL, man! I should try that some time!

Then again, if they don't believe in God, then they probably don't believe in hell either.

When someone sneezes, I always say, "Gesundheit". I'm half German, so it makes sense. It's literal translation into English is simply, "Health."

Psalm 34 says "Bless the Lord at all times!"
So, to me it's a reminder and an "opportunity" to Bless God, whether I or someone else sneezes...I say, God bless you and...Bless God! (I hope it catches on)!
