My laptop failed me today. I was getting ready to close the internet, but the window didn't close. I waited a couple minutes then tried to close it again. It's Vista, so the screen went whitish like it was fading out to a close but froze. I hit CTRL+ALT+Delete to try to bring up the task manager, but it never came up, so I manually shut off power. I turned it on again and it advised me to go to Safe Mode. Did that and then went to shut it down properly. Then I restarted it in Normal mode, but when it would try to log in, it would take an incredible long time to do it, then it would have all these errors like my antivirus and explorer.exe failed to load. One time it even went to the infamous Blue Screen of Death. I took it to Firedog to see what they can do, they initially said it might be the hardrive but would run diagnostics to see what's wrong.

What do you think, is my computer screwed? Can they even retrieve my files? I can find my bookmarks again, redownload programs, my photos are a loss I can live with, but it's my music collection I'm concerned about. I synced my iPod a few days ago so right now thousands of dollars of downloaded music is surviving only in a thing smaller than a deck of cards? Can you even transfer music from an iPod into iTunes? Excuse me if this seems superficial, but I'm rather attached to my music. :| It's fourth behind my fiancee, my family, and my dog. I can't believe I'm stressing out over making sure my music survives. :|

yes you can copy all your music from your ipod back to another computer.

if your computer started in safe mode, they should be able to retrieve all your files.

sounds to me like you had a corrupt system file, quite often a chkdsk (scandisk) will recover the corrupted system files, or at least allow you to recover your data. if the hard drive isn't dead, you'll be ok. if it is, the transfer of music files from ipod to itunes is pretty easy.

So the computer starts fine in safe mode? but wont in normal mode? if thats the case then its just something to do with windows and the drive itself *should* be fine.
If you have the vista install disk try putting that in the drive, boot from it. There are options in there to try and fix vista when it starts up. I cant remember iff the top of my head what its called but its easy to spot.

As for the music, I dont use itunes. But once you buy it isn't there a record of the purchase? and cant you re-download it?

send me a message if you have questions on the pc.

Repeat after me: "I will get a portable hard drive, and I will use it faithfully."

Now repeat that 100 times a day.

If nothing else, get a 16gb thumb drive for 20 bucks and use that to backup your itunes.

The same thing happened to me and my bf. He literally had thousands of songs on my computer when it broke and I had to get a new hard drive; they couldn't save the music. But he also had it all on his ipod and there is programs you can get for about $20 online to transfer your songs onto itunes.

External hard drive. If the laptop isn't okay, you can get all of your stuff off of it that way and onto another laptop/pc. I had to do it a few months back. Mine was older..went off and never came back on.

Very, very easy to do as well. X-Drive..they sell them at Best Buy.
