Taking notes in class..
taking notes in class.. / Career / 10:34 PM - Tuesday May 13, 2008
A Trendsetter (Female, Who Cares?, Student) asked:

Ok so I just started a new semester yesterday. Anyway for one of my class, the tests are just based on the professor's notes so I guess that's a pretty important thing I have to do...take notes in class. So which is faster and better in your opinion...writing the notes by hand or typing instead? Is it worth it to carry my laptop to class and type the notes or should I stick to the old way?

both work what ever you are moast comphy with however i still like the recording thing and type them later the prof will not like you doing all the typing as it apears you are not reley paying atention and retypeing them later lets you obsorb them beter as you are paying more atention to what he says not just typing them as words

Tape them...then type out the important things to study.

I feel like I'm slowly and unwillingly becoming a veteran note taker. Typing is generally faster as long as you actually know how to type well. In fact typing should be much faster. That being said taking notes by hand helps the brain to learn the material and taking time to write things out allows time for your brain to process and sort the information. I take notes by hand unless the teacher is talking/writing/present ing extremely quickly.

Will your professor allow you to tape his class. That would let you concentrate more on what he is talking about while having the notes on tape.

I am an old guy, around since before they built the hills so take what I say with a grain of salt and knock it back with a libation of your choice...

I have found from experience that handwritten notes are more valuable than the keyboard variety. True, I have been into puters since 1961, so you would think that i would recommend the laptop. But I don't and here is why:

Somehow, the handwritten note hooks up in the memory part of the brain better than keyboard letters. When you write something down there is an organic feel to it that just makes recovering that information from memory way easier.

I have other memory exercises I use to help me recollect keyboard data, but it is such a waste of time because I can go back to the puter and get it almost all of the time. The trouble with that and tests is that it is still unusual for a professor to let students use the laptop during tests. So. Pick and choose for yourself. Just make sure you do whatever is in your best interest.
