A Sweet Sarah (Female, 22-25, Student) asked:

How long does it take to get over someone and finally let them go if you were together for 4 years (co-hab: planning on getting married in the future) and they broke up with you?

It's been three weeks for me. How much longer will it take?

I broke up with my fiance of five years a few years ago, for me it was about 3 months until I started dating again, 6 months before I felt any kind of emotional connection to anyone, about a year before I wanted a relationship again and nearly two before I found a guy I really love. When I was going through it a friend said to me it takes half the length of a relationship to really get over it. For me the pain lasted for about 7 months but the issues from it I'm still getting over. I was cheated on and while you get over the pain of it, the inner doubts and anxiety don't go away as easily. At three weeks I'd just be glad I was still breathing.

At least three more weeks.
3 more months will be a clean sweep.
Don't you wish you could take that part of your brain and put it in a no feeling mode until the time thing is over?

It depends on the individual. I have dated the same person since 1990. I had traveled in my business and also moved. Him being an attorney, stayed there. He would fly out to see me or fly me in to see him. We had plans on getting married, but his daughters of 21 & 24 had other ideas. They loved that we were together until MARRIAGE came into the picture. So, I now live in Texas and he is still in Colorado. We still communicate by phone and on email. But if you really are IN love with someone, it takes a long time to get over them. I moved back home, thinking that distance would solve the problem. It does to a point, but not really. Once you let someone into your heart that deep, it is hard to get them out or let anyone else in. I am 53, you are younger. Don't make the same mistake by not letting anyone else in.

You thank God that this all happened for a reason and that you hadn't gotten married where you would of had a worse time getting over it. There are more than one fish in the sea and the right one will come along. You never get over a lost love, they will remain your love forever in your heart.

It can take an hour or it can take a year, first you have to "cry it all out", get depressed, cry some more, remember the good times then cry some more, then you will proberly get a little angry, thats a good thing, but dont get to angry, because that little bit of anger will let the memories of the stupid things he did that bothered you. Stay away from all those love songs!!!! . Go and do something that makes you look fabulous, like a new hair style, and a new outfit, when other guys check you out and you get that little feeling like you want to "giggle", well... You know you are on your way to getting over him.
