Babylon candle

Did the idea of a babylon candle exist prior to the book and Film Stardust?
What is its origins?
Has it anything to do with the nursery rhyme, How many miles to Babylon?

Don't know, but Babylon was famous for its tower, hanging gardens, multiple empires, etc.
The English title of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was "Harry Potter and the PHILOSOPHERS' Stone." The Philosophers' Stone was an ancient alchemical tool believe to grant power with exchange. The cartoon Full Metal Alchemist talks about it at length, but it is an old idea.

In Islam, it is writtern in the Holy Quran that Babylon did indeed exist and two angels ordained by god called Harut and Marut descended to Babylon to reveal the secrets of magic but with the forewarning that anyone who sought to gain this knowledge would not be favoured by God. However, the angels' task ordained by the Almighty was to teach it and that they would do.....albeit with dire consequences for those who dabbled in this dark art. As a Muslim and one who believes that the word of Allah in the Quran will remain uncorrupted till the end of time, I believe that all things dealing with magic such as Babylon candles and the Philosopher's stone are a part of the forbidden teachings taught to the people of Babylon by order from God by the two angels. The consequences were disastrous and the entire civilization was wiped out by the wrath of the Almighty for their sin.
