(Female, 26-28) asked:

This may sound like a dumb question but do women still get their periods when they are on birth control pills?

I have never used birth control pills before and am thinking about it.

What's a good brand for birth control pills?

Yup, it actually controls your period so you know when it's gonna come almost to the day...and my cramps are far less painful...almost non-existant!

Generally, you still get your period on the pill. However, this depends on how you take it- if you want to, you can never have a period (any brand) or have one only 4x a year (Seasonal). Most women have a monthly period on the pill.

Talk to your doctor about what you want. The pill is a really personal thing and they all have pros and cons. What works great for one person, doesn't work well for the next.

Yes you will stil get your period while you are taking birth control.. depending on the type that you go with weather it be pill, patch shot ring or whatever.. It can reduce your flow and cramps, theres even one out there that is saying that with in time you can only have 3 periods a year(kinda scary if you ask me)

Of course. You stopped taking them for a week to let your period come. I used a mini pill for years and never got pregnant. Ask your doctor whats best for you. Beware--the birth control pill usually decreases a womens sex drive quite a bit, no matter what kind you take.

yeah...you still get a period, but it's normally alot lighter and less painful....i have an IUD, which lasts for 10 years, and is more effective than even the pill, but i also take the pill everyday to make my periods more comfortable....lol....o thro-tri-cyclen low ...or othro evra are good choices....raz is supposed to be a good new one, but i haven't ever taken it

I use Loestrin and I love it. Barely noticeable cramps, short and light periods. I haven't noticed any side effects and I have been taking these for almost a year now.

Okay, so basically "the pill" is a set of 28 pills, of which 7 are glucose and the rest comprise of hormones. Basically when you are on the pill it mimics the bodies normal hormones that you would have if you were pregnant and prevents you from ovulating, which prevents you from becoming pregnant. You take the sugar pills at the same time you would take a normal pill and they stop the hormones which makes you have your period.

Which type of pill you take (some are stronger than others) may depend on your body, and as you need a prescription from your doctor I would tell him any problems you have eg extremely heavy or light periods, hormonal problems whatever.

Some pills seem to be better and have less side effects, I have used a couple of different ones for the past couple of years and the best one I've been on so far is Yasmin. However Yasmin is more expensive and each person reacts differently so consult your doctor as side-effects might be due to the fact you need a lower dose or another factor.
