A Career Man (Male, New York, 29-35, Financial / Banking) asked:

Are there any 'dealer fees' or hidden fees associated with buying a car from a dealership? (new or used)

I thought that whatever the listed price of the car is, is all that you pay unless some kind of work needs to be done...

It's different depending on where you go. In most cases the dealer fee is the markup they have on the car. What you'll end up paying extra for is the inspection, registration, interest on a loan, loan application fees, and early loan payoff fees...

Well there is tax, title and license fees, as well as sometimes financing fees, along with warranty fees. Really the bottom line happens in the finance dept., not on the showroom floor.

Filing fees, registration fees, taxes, any waranties or service agreements that you buy, if you buy gap insurance, etc. you have to read what you sign very carefully before you actually do write your name and question EVERYTHING.

Tax, license, and trasnfer fees. Also if you buy a warranty from the dealership, that will also add. (Granted every vehicle has a manufacturers warranty, it's always good to have one ready that covers more than just the basics.) Other than that, no. Usually tax, lic, and trans. amount to about a grand or so, depending on how much the vehicle costs that you are buying.

Since I was once in the car business for many years being both a salesman and a finance mgr. I'll tell you that you should definitely do your "homework" on the car that you're interested in buying.. I suggest Consumer Reports.. They will point out what you should be charged for and also what to watch for when the contract is ready to be signed...Many dealers will get all they can get, so you much watch for "hidden" charges..They don't like to leave any dollars on the table!!! I hope this helps...Good Luck and be VERY CAREFUL to what you are signing!
