Do breaks ever work?
Do breaks ever work? / Dating / 10:55 PM - Thursday July 14, 2005
A Sweet Sarah (Female, Dallas, 26-28, Retail) asked:

My boyfriend of 5 years and I decided to take a break. I am 26 and have an itch to be single. He has always said he loves me and wants to marry me but I am tired of waiting and instituted the break. Do any of you have experience on exactly what being on a break means? Do you think a relationship can survive a break?

It depends. If you two are meant to be, you will be. A break means you both can date who you want and if you end up finding someone you want to be with more, then you're meant to move on. Sometimes couples find their way back to one another, sometimes it doesn't happen. It just depends on your path in life.

A break basically means you are single again but willing to discuss the idea of getting back together.

I think Ross and Rachel have had the feud going on for years :)

When a break is initiated it is usually a good indicator that the relationship is on its way out. Not that you lose a friend per se but you may lose a lover.

Yes I do. I think that if there is a strong relationship there, friendship, compatability, common interests and values........then yes it can. A break should be for a set ammount of time and there should be a goal. If it is open ended that is not good. Also if there not a real reason for it.....like re-assessing before making a bigger commitment, then that is problem.

My question, if you have an itch to be single, then what does it matter if he is going to propose or not? Your post doesn't make sense. Do you want to be single, or is this a ploy to get him to propose?
