An Alternative Girl (Female, 26-28, Who Cares?) asked:

NEED HELP!!

I feel so big and I know I can stand to lose a good amt of lbs. I know that exercise is major in any weight loss program. Heres the thing though I have to work at 9 it takes me at the very min an hr to get to work. I'm on my feet all day at work and most of the time i come home exhausted (that plus i work outside under the sun so that adds to the tired of being on my feet) I want to look good for me. I want to finally slim down (a pretty damn good amt) and keep it off. My goal is to do this by my bday (which is 14 wks away). I'm not in any way trying to be this very thin girl (personally it does nothing for me) I still want to have the curves, but I just dont want to be so ugh feeling. I'm not ugly or digusting looking becuase I dont exactly have a hard time meeting people. But I do want to do this for me. I have had to battle the bulge all my life. I just want to finally get it over and done with and not just lose 20 and stop there and go back to my 'average weight'. I do drink a lot of water and I try to eat somewhat good. I just ugh, am frustrated with me on this subject right now. Please help!!! Any tips, advice, personal weight loss success stories would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Honey, I lost so much weight I think I lost a full person from my body once. Here are some tips:

-take the stairs
-park far from the stores and sprint to them from a far corner of the parking lots
-do not drink anything with high fructose corn syrup (sodas!!!)
-do not eat fried foods (potato chips????)
-do have a bowl of oatmeal or low cal cereal every a.m. and switch to skim milk/soy milk
-do get to know baked sweet potatoes and other things that can replace sweet tooth cravings (angel food cake with fruit, nonfat chocolate syrups/hot cocoas instead of other stuff, etc.)
-avoid alcohol
-eat some healthy fats but in moderation and snack on rice cakes (they even have chocolate flavored ones for pms cravings!)
-get tons of healthy soup recipes for feeling full at home and drink tons of water, order soup at places, and maybe an appetizer.
-popcorn on your stove (or airpopped) seasoned with Old Bay seasonings, or other types of stuff are healthy to snack on when you're nervous
-no hydrogenated oils and restrict processed white flour goods (or ban completely)
-visit a health food store once a month and get an mp3 player so you can take walks during weekends, and first thing in the morning (wake up early and walk, do jumping jacks, jump rope)
-check out w w w dot fitday dot com for help online with figuring out how many calories you eat and how much you burn
-consider getting a CURVES membership (women only) and also doing some weight training or paying a trainer for a session at your local rec center/gym and doing that for a few months
-remember to try hiking hilly areas, and also walk for at least forty minutes EVERY DAY!

If you have a treadmill, (outside should work too, being your in LV), or something I would say wake up 15 minutes earlier (though 20 is ideal) and walk/run a mile. Make sure you drink alot of water, like a gallon a day. Also, eat alot of whole grains and limit fruits like bananas - they have alot of sugar. Cut out soda or anything like that all together. Make sure you eat, if possible like 4 to 5 small meals a day or 3 meals and 2 very small snacks in between. Then before bed try another mile walk/run. Make sure you get enough sleep too - thats so important for weight loss.
Breaking up your work outs will boost your metabolism and buy you time. Cutting out soda or coffee with sugar will help a lot- those things are empty calories. Whole grains are filling and break down differently than starches or white breads. And all the water will flush your system. Sleep is also crux for weightloss as I mentioned above.

Oh yeah. And try not to eat after 8 on weeknights. And limit alcohol intake on weekends. Don't be so strict that you will blow your diet though.

I could go on about tricks of the trade but I learned them all from a book called, Body for Life by Bill Phillips. Right now you can go to his websibe and check out the major transformations of people. He has a 12 week program that gives such amazing results it is unbelievable and it is free. It is just a way to eat and a way to workout that actually works to give you the fastest results. To get to the website type in: body for life. Do it right now, you will feel so much better!!

The first secret to weight loss is not to set an unrealistic goal. Realistically you can lose a pound a week. If you don't have time to exercise, don't. Just walk. I used to work at Rodale Press (publisher of Men's Health, Prevention, etc.) and knew SO many people who lost weight just walking. One girl lost 75 lbs. in six months just by walking and drinking water. Everyone can walk, it requires no additional equipment except good sneakers, and doesn't take that much time. And don't set a time goal like 14 weeks for completion. Just set a goal like--start walking today. Then your next goal--walk tomorrow. Gradually build up to every day, then more distance, etc. By the time six months goes by, you'll have lost and won't even feel like you had to work at it. As soon as you start losing, you will feel so much better that it will be doable. Also, don't get discouraged if you don't totally lose every week. In fact, don't even weigh yourself on a scale at all. Muscle mass weighs more, but you will notice the difference in your jeans. Also, building muscle (which you will do in your legs if you walk) helps speed up metabolism which causes you to lose more. Good luck! Knock 'em dead.

Well I have a very hectic schedule, I work 9-5:30, my son has All Stars every night and of course I am a single parent so I am pretty exhausted by the time I get home at night. The way that I stay fit is to wake up 1/2 hr earlier and run/walk for 30 min. I love it because it is like I get it out of the way and can continue on my day. It is a combination of things, cut calories, work out and drink lots of fluids. I eat whatever I want I just don't eat allot of it. To do this when you order something get a to go box and put 1/2 away for later. Good luck.

I would definitely spend at least 10-20 minutes a day doing some sort of weight training -- the more muscle you add, the more calories you burn during the day. Don't worry about bulking up; women don't have the testosterone to do that.

Start your morning with some modified pushups (it'll make your shoulders, arms, and chest look nice and toned!). Then get a big stability ball and do situps on it. It will really tone up your mid-section and the ball is really fun! You don't even have to do that many sit-ups; as long as you're focused on your abs as you do them, and do them a bit slowly, even 10 situps a day will make a difference. Finally, do walking lunges around your house, and make sure you get down low. That will firm up your butt and thighs. If you've got 20 minutes to spare, you can do this routine.

Re: diet and nutrition. When I need to slim down I start to eat more low-fat yogurt, oatmeal with skim milk, and more apples and fresh berries. These foods are filling, satisfy sweet cravings, and will take you to your next meal so that you don't binge on bad foods. Avoid all sodas, even diet. I also like eating non-sugary cereals with skim milk as meal substitutions -- they have high fiber, keep me satisfied, and will help you cut out about 250-500 calories/day (I bet your lunches or dinners are much more caloric than a 250 calorie bowl of cereal). Good luck!

Hello.

I lost 75 lbs on Weight Watchers. I didn't go to meetings, only once to get the information I needed. My main thing was to exersize daily. I walked about 35 minutes a day, trying to beat my previous time. I never got into running, I just didn't enjoy it. I gained back some of that weight, and want to lose about 10 or at the most 15. This time around I'm using an eliptical trainer instead of walking. I no longer live in an area where I can walk a lot, and if I have to drive somewhere to do it, I know I just won't do it. This is rather motivating. I had given up soda for a good year, then had one can because there was nothing else available, and that did me in. I can't stand yogurt, but I also did make my own substitutions. Put only healthier foods in your house, including healthy "treats" graham crackers with whip cream in between works great ( freeze it for a bit, and it's like an ice cream sandwich). Big thing is to eat better ( duh..), but I noticed it's about taking it one day at at a time. It wont' be so daunting...I'm having problems because I am going to Las Vegas soon, and don't want to damn myself before then..Good luck to you! It's hard, but it's worth it..unfortunately, it's not something you can do and then stop..it's gotta be for the long haul.

I haven't tried this yet but there is a book called "Body Clutter" out that helps you deal with all the issues behind your eating habits. I believe it is available at Amazon.com and in book stores. There are a lot of great testimonials about it on www.Flylady.net. Good luck!
