An Intellectual Guy (Male, Seattle, 36-45, Other Profession) asked:

Excuse me for this but my budget calls for early action on a Christmas gift for my sweetie. I will say that I have a price range of between 100 and 300 dollars for my ideal gift on lay-away. I have an idea of what I want to get for her but I would like to hear some suggestions from you. What would you women consider to be a take your breath away christmas gift from your love?

You don't say how long you've been seeing her or what the relationship is like. Really need that to do you very much good. But, make it something that shows you know what her interests are. That gets you points for paying attention.

Diamonds, diamonds and um, diamonds. You can get a very nice pair of diamond studs for under $300 if you find a place with quality merchandise and resonable prices. Ask your friends if they know anybody in the business, I get all of my jewelry from my cousin's husband in Cincinnati, excellent jewels at "wholesale" prices.

If she's not a big fan of jewelry, get her something that's personal...nothing for the house or home, that's very impersonal...no matter how practical it may be, it won't make her swoon.

It's so far before Christmas that you can safely take her to the mall and watch, carefully what she gravitates towards, clothes? shoes? books? watches? just take her lead and go with it, she won't have a clue in October that you're already scopin her interests for a present.

cater to her interests. this means you've paid attention. for instance, if my husband bought me a diamond ring, i would be mystified. irritated even.
what the hell would i do with a diamond ring for heaven's sake. yuk. but, if he bought me a marshall amplifier, or a new guitar or a new piece of weightlifting equipment or a digital camera or a nice portable mp3-cd player, then i would be thrilled beyond measure. so, what does this girl do in her spare time? what are the things SHE spends money on, her splurges? figure that out, and you've got great gift ideas.
